Art Therapy

According to the American Art Therapy Association art therapy is “the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma, or challenges in living, and by people who seek professional development. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others, cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.”
Art therapy provides communication that is non-threatening and non-judgmental. It creates a safe space between myself and my clients for them to explore their feelings, express themselves and cope with stressors and challenges they are dealing with on a regular basis. The casual approach to art therapy creates safety and allows the process to be more inviting and open for clients to feel validated and in control of this environment, this is a place they get to call the shots and have a therapist to support them and follow their lead.

How Does Art Therapy Help?

Art Therapy offers clients a different way to express their thoughts, feeling, and emotions without having to use verbal communication. Art Therapy is healing both in the products that are created during sessions, but also in the act of creating itself. Symbols used in the creative process can be a way to access the unconscious allowing for deeper processing and healing to happen. A variety of art materials can be used in sessions including drawing, clay, sculpture, weaving, painting and much more.
